Fare Hike = UNFAIR for G riders!
Save The G, a coalition of civic groups and transportation advocates from
Brooklyn and Queens, remains opposed to the MTA's shortsighted service cuts
on the G subway line:
- All G trains have been shortened from six cars to only four.
- The G train now terminates at the Court Square station during peak commuting
hours.
- During peak commuting hours, all access is cut off to the N and R trains, forcing
G train riders to walk a long and difficult transfer tunnel to the E and
V trains.
The MTA and Governor Pataki hoped that the V train would be a boon to
riders in Queens. Now even the MTA admits that the V still runs far below
its capacity. The G is not only a heavily used train today - we're going
to see an increase in ridership very, very soon. Greenpoint, Williamsburg
and Downtown Brooklyn are undergoing a surge in development, bringing a
huge influx of new residents. Long Island City is becoming an important
business and shopping district. The G is a true lifeline, connecting
neighborhoods to each other and to the subway and bus lines that allow
us to travel throughout Brooklyn and Queens.
The Governor and the MTA made a big mistake when they cut G service and put the
V in its place. A huge (and growing) number of people ride the G train every day,
while the V is a train that no one wants to use.
By allowing the MTA to increase fares while downgrading service, Governor Pataki is
continuing to disregard working class communities that depend on the G train.
We cannot afford to pay more for less service!
What can you do?
Call Governor Pataki at (212) 681-4580 and MTA Chairman Peter Kalikow at
(212) 878-7200.
- Save The G demands that current full night and weekend service be maintained.
- G trains must be increased in length to six cars.
- The G train must travel to Queens Plaza at all times.
- Full service must be restored to the G line!
